Book Review: On Purpose by Tanya Dalton

In the chaotic rush of our days, we can easily get caught up in the ‘doing’ of life, and we sometimes don’t take time to pause, step back, and choose. That’s what this book is designed to do. It’s an intentional pause in your hectic schedule, a chance to take a good look at how you’ve been going through your days and question how you feel…I want to empower you to choose how you want to think. I want to shake the foundations of how you view your world. Because it is YOUR world, and it’s filled with opportunities and choices that perhaps you didn’t realize were there. Or, more often than not, you’ve forgotten the choices were there at all.

Tanya Dalton

I can honestly say that I never really had a plan for my life. I mean, I had steps I knew I was supposed to take like, graduate high school, graduate college, find a secure job with good benefits, get married, have kids, raise kids, keep working said secure job until retirement, become a grandparent.

But I never, ever really took the time to think about what I REALLY wanted or WHY I was doing what I was doing.

It’s like, most of my life has been about just going through the motions and being okay with “good enough.”

Don’t get me wrong; I have loved raising my 2 daughters & growing older with my husband, but outside of that, I never really questioned if what I was doing was fulfilling, was it what I REALLY wanted to be doing with my life?

It’s okay if you feel like you’ve been struggling. It’s okay to admit you might not be fulfilled by the roles you currently play. It’s okay to want more, but it’s up to you to go and get it.

On Purpose, pg 194

Tanya Dalton’s book On Purpose, helped me sort out and prioritize my deepest wants and wishes. With the thought-provoking questions and the helpful tools and strategies she provides, I was able to explore where I have been in my life and decide where I want to go. She helped me realize that my “comfort zone is a dangerous place to live because as much as we seem to enjoy comfort and routine, we are often happiest when challenged and making progress” (pg. 97).

On Purpose isn’t about just setting goals: it’s about creating a path, taking action steps, to get us to the lives we really want to live. It’s about deciding for OURSELVES what kind of a life would really make us feel fulfilled. It’s about busting out of the ho-hum of life on auto-pilot and purposefully creating the experiences we REALLY want.

From inside the book jacket:

Productivity expert Tanya Dalton doesn’t tell you what to think. She empowers you to chose HOW to think. She doesn’t help you fit in with the status quo; instead she shakes the foundation of how you view the world.

In On Purpose, Tanya propels you to ask and answer your own deepest questions. Offering cutting-edge research and thought-provoking info-graphics, she leads you through innovative exercises designed to hope you understand how to create a map to your ideal future, actionable strategies to move forward with confidence, simple shifts to turn unexpected obstacles into opportunities, and daily steps you can take toward a more fulfilling life.

Living On Purpose isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about rising up and becoming the best version of you. It’s about adjusting your mindset so you can discover your daily choices. It’s about finding the unhurried purpose that is hidden in each one of your days when you stay true to your soul’s path.

“Here’s the big question for us: Where are we going on our trips around the sun? Do you know? Do you see the progress, or do you feel disoriented–unsure of where exactly you are and what you need to do next?”
