Following the Breadcrumbs

Have you ever watched that movie where Indiana Jones has to cross the void with no bridge in front of him. He has to trust and believe that the bridge is there, but he can’t see it? So he steps out into the void hoping something appears, and voila! A step does appear. And each time he takes another step, another step appears until he has safely reached his destination.

Our journey into RV life was quite like that.

It was May 2021, COVID was waning a bit, and homes & RVs–especially Class A motorhomes which we wanted–were selling like hotcakes.

One beautiful, warm a-typical Ohio spring day, I had the urge to drive 2 hours to a Camping World in Indiana to shop RVs.

Breadcrumb #1

We had been talking about doing the whole full-time RV life for a couple of years, but when Ray’s mom unexpectedly passed away in March 2020 (not from COVID), we knew it was time to stop talking and to start doing.

So we went–to “look.” We wanted to get a sense of what was out there, what we liked and what we didn’t like. We knew we were looking for something that felt like home and we had ZERO expectations that it would be there that day.

I said, “Let’s just go to get a sense of what it is we really want” (Kind of like the day I said, “Let’s just go test drive the Audi to see how it drives” and “Let’s just go see what that house looks like” HAHA!).

We really had no intentions of actually buying an RV that day; I was just following a nudge–a breadcrumb–a feeling of something I was supposed to be doing.

Breadcrumb #2

It turned out to be a gloriously fun day!

We went in and out of EVERY RV they had on the lot. We sat on countless couches, critiqued many a set up, and talked about what we desired for our future.

Out of all the RVs we saw that day, we both kind of liked this one 5th wheel that had more of a homey vibe than the rest, so we went back for a second look.

As we were exiting the 5th wheel, we met a random couple just outside the door. We chatted a bit about what we were looking for when the husband said, “You should go look over there,” and he made a sweeping motion with his arm. He was referring to another 5th wheel (that was apparently better suited to full-time living), but when I turned my head to see where he was pointing, I saw our RV.

Breadcrumb #3

She was nestled back behind other RVs, and we would have totally missed seeing her if this man hadn’t pointed (randomly) in her direction.

I said, “Oh look, Ray. There’s a Class A over there that we haven’t seen. Let’s go look.”

We never made it to that other 5th wheel.

As soon as I started climbing the steps, before I even knew what she looked like inside, I knew: we found what we were looking for.

It was a feeling that came over both of us.

Breadcrumb #4

We sat inside that sweltering RV for about an hour just soaking it all in. I laid on the couch. I pretended to prop my feet up on a coffee table to watch TV. We sat at the dinette like we were eating dinner. I saw myself making meals in the kitchen, showering in the bathroom, and sleeping peacefully in the bedroom. I called my mom. (IYKYK!)

Then we discovered that it was a 2014 with only 4,000 miles on it.

Breadcrumb #5

We did not inspect the RV. We did not test drive it. We knew nothing about what makes an RV good or bad. We weren’t even “campers.” We didn’t even know how we would pay for it or where we would keep it. But we somehow just knew, it was time.

Long story short, we just kept taking the steps (aka followed lots of breadcrumbs).

One step lead to another step and another step, and in August 2021, we found ourselves completely moved out of our home (which we sold at the height of the housing market), our daughters on their respective college campuses, and us completely moved into our new-to-us mobile residence.

And what an expansive 20 months it has been!

I didn’t know this then, but this is how manifestation works.

You start with a vision. You bolster it with belief. And you bring it to fruition with action.

You trust and believe that it’s possible and you listen for the nudges. You stay open to the breadcrumbs. You look for the synchronicities. And you go. You do. You follow.

Sometimes you end up exactly where you thought you’d be, but more often than not, you land somewhere far better than you could ever imagine.

And that’s exactly how I’m feeling today with new nudges and new inklings (which I’ll save for another blog post!).

So follow the breadcrumbs. Believe in the magic. Keep the faith.

And watch how life unfolds.
