Mindset Monday | The Power of I AM

Happy Monday Friends!!!

If you are on my email list, this post will look familiar! Scroll to the bottom for the FREE PDF download!

I figured email inboxes get cluttered and information gets lost (at least that’s what happens in my inboxes…lol!), so why not also put the content from the email here on the blog…🤷‍♀️

I like to set an intention for each week…something that I am focused on to help me grow and change or reach whatever goal it is I am working toward.

I was listening to a podcast the other day (All it takes is a Goal by Jon Acuff, episode 70), where Acuff was interviewing Scott Jeffrey Miller who mentions a man who was born with no legs and no arms and the amazing accomplishments this man has made in spite of his disabilities.

Scott Jeffrey Miller said that he thinks of this man whenever he bemoans taking out the garbage or cutting the grass or doing a hundred other mundane tasks that he doesn’t really want to do.

Instead of saying, “I have to take out the trash,” he says instead, “I get to take out the trash” because there are many people in the world who are physically incapable of using their bodies to take out the trash.

Changing the way he talks about the activity changes his perspective/and attitude toward the task at hand.

This made me think about how we talk to ourselves on a daily basis and how the words we use literally shape and define us.

🔥 How speaking from our limiting beliefs disempowers us vs speaking from our possibilities empowers us. 🔥

How many times in a day do you say something like, “I am so tired?”

Or, “I am just someone who doesn’t/can’t do xyzzy?”

Or, “I am someone who struggles with…”

Or, “I am so unorganized.”

Or, “I am a hot mess.”

Or any number of combinations of “I am.”

Some of my “I am” statements have been things like:

I am bad at math.

I am not a fast runner.

I am miserable.

I am gross to look at.

I am always running behind.

I am bad with money.

I am never going to lose weight because I can’t stick to meal plans.

I am someone who just enjoys food too much.

I am not a fitness expert.

🔥 We speak our realities into existence when we use “I AM” statements. 🔥

When we use negative “I AM” statements like the ones I mentioned above, we are strengthening our limiting beliefs, and these limiting beliefs keep us stuck.

When I say, “I am bad with money,”  for example, I don’t try to learn how to implement money systems because I’ve already decided I can’t do them–because I am bad with money–and I just keep perpetuating bad money situations.

But what if I said instead, “I am someone who is learning to keep track of the money I am spending?” With this “I AM” statement, I feel more empowered to take ownership of my spending habits because I am speaking from a place of possibilities.

Our limiting beliefs are sneaky things, and sometimes we don’t even realize they are coming out of our mouths!

💡 This week I challenge you to pay attention to your “I AM” statements. 💡

How often do you define yourself in a negative way, speaking your limiting beliefs about yourself into existence?

Take time to write them down this week in your Notes on your phone, or in your journal (or even on just a random piece of paper) so you can explore them and change them!
